On July 10th,2018, the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) awarded Dr.Hyun Pyo Jeon the Minister Prize for his remarkable achievements in orchestrating nano safety R&D and using his vast experience with European organizations to create effective new business policy.
The new European regulations known as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) require that all nanomaterials and nano-based products imported to Europe be authorized by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) upon submission of the necessary registration documents. It is a process rife with complications for Korean nanotech companies. To help ease their burden, Dr. Jeon conducted the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy’s Development for Nano-Product Safety Inventory project, assisted Korean companies in meeting REACH regulations, and achieved successful outcomes by giving consultations that relied on Korean technologies and data rather than on those of Europe. The result is a group of newly registered nanomaterials that can perhaps be utilized in support of last-mover industries during future enrollment in REACH or K-REACH, thanks to his development of related core technologies and know-how for conducting environmental risk assessments on nanomaterials. Furthermore, the reliance on domestic data for completing REACH registration—without resorting to data from foreign manufacturers—is expected to greatly boost Korea’s MWCNT manufacturing markets.
