On May 29, 2019, KIST Europe’s Smart Convergence Group, which develops intelligent systems for comprehensive factory operations and fosters the application of AI-based 4th Industrial Revolution technologies, hosted this special forum on behalf of experts from Korea and Europe.

Participants introduced the research capacities and infrastructures of their various organizations and discussed ideas and methods for jumpstarting research collaboration.

Dr. Jongwoon Hwang, head of the Smart Convergence Group, stated, “Manufacturing is a strong element of both the European and Korean economies. A large amount of IoT devices are being installed in smart factories to enable vertical and horizontal integration. The next step is to explore the workability of even newer technologies and expand the future potential of smart factories in general.”

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Detlef Zühlke, honorary executive board member at SmartfactoryKL, added that “South Korea has excellent AI technologies and skillful researchers. Through such workshops, we can share information and engage in further discussions.”

The workshop was designed to encourage brainstorming on how European countries can better cooperate with Korea on its Smart Factory Testbed.

Dr. Hwang wrapped things up by saying, “KIST Europe aims to construct a successful research network between Europe and Korea for launching the Smart Factory Testbed.”
